    LIMA

Known as “The City of Kings”, Lima’s colonial history, apparent in its streets, dates back to 1535, the year when it was founded and recognized as the capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru. When independence was proclaimed in 1821, the city became the capital of the Republic of Peru and, therefore, the political center of the country.

Today, the architecture of Lima ranges from that of the colonial period to the most avant-garde hotels and resorts.

  • Glimpse of the ‘Sacred Valley’of the Incas

The beautiful valley, known as ‘Vilcamayo’ to the Incas, stretches out from the Inca citadels of Pisac to Ollantaytambo along the Urubamba River or “Sacred River”. The town of Pisa is located 33 kilometers from the city of Cusco, and is virtually the gateway to this valley. The Sacred Valley, watered by numerous rivers originated in the Snowy Mountains, was greatly appreciated by the ancient Incas due to the excellent farming qualities, its fertile agriculture, and it was also viceroys´s favorite place due to the good weather. This is with no doubt one of the most important sites in Cusco. It is said that the picturesque village of Ollantaytambo and the ruins contain the Incas most impressive stone work of Peru.

Learn more of the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

  • Glimpse of Machu Picchu

PeruRail is the only method of travel to Machu Picchu if you do not want to walk the Inca trail, with train departures from Cusco and Ollantaytambo.

Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas, is one of the most famous examples of Inca architecture and is located 112 km from the city of Cusco(a 3 ½ hour journey by train), 2,350 meters above sea level.

The ruins are surrounded by lush jungle and are believed to have been built in the mid-15th century by Inca Pachacutec. Lost in history, the ruins were not discovered until 1911 by the American explorer, Hiram Bingham.

This famous citadel combines the visual and spiritual force of magnificent natural scenery with a historic sanctuary, and was recently recognized asCultural and Natural Heritage of the World. Only the Inca and his nobles, priests, priestesses, and chosen women had free access to Machu Picchu.

The ruins themselves are situated on the eastern slope of Machu Picchu in two separate areas – agricultural and urban. The latter includes the civil sector (dwellings and canalisations) and the sacred sector (temples, mausoleums, squares and royal houses).
