Once thought to be higher than Mt. Kilimanjaro before exploding, the crater is an iconic wilderness and safari destination. Linked to the Serengeti, the two areas were formed at the same time. With the explosion the crater was formed. Time and wind ensured the ground cover and vegetation, producing one of the most nutritious eco-systems on earth. There are said to be 25 000 animals living in the crater, many of which are permanent residents.
