The Local Climate

Zanzibar Pemba Island has a tropical monsoon climate and has two rainy and two dry periods. The first rainy period is from March till May, the second one is from October till December. Temperatures are very pleasant all year round.

The best weather is between December and March and again from July to early November, with the optimum months being July through to September.

The warmest temperatures are between January and March with a refreshing sea breeze. Daytime temperatures vary between 26 and 32 degrees centigrade.

Garden Rooms

The 7 garden rooms are open plan makuti thatched rooms situated in the gardens. They all feature king size beds covered by mosquito nets, en-suite open plan bathroom, and a comfortable verandah to relax on. These rooms are not air-conditioned.

The Underwater Floating Room - WOW!

There is the heart-stopping experience that awaits you in the underwater room.

The floating structure, provides three levels – The landing deck, at sea level, has a lounge area and bathroom facility. A ladder leads up to the roof which has a lounging area – for sun worshipping by day – and by night you can lie back in the starlight and wonder at the extraordinary clarity of the stars and planets – all seen without any light pollution. Sleep under the stars to the soft murmuring of the sea.

By night, the underwater spotlights beneath each window around the room attract the shyer and more unusual, for instance squid. Octopus and even spanish dancers have been seen attaching themselves to the glass panes, and the reef inhabitants simply can’t resist the attraction, which makes for exciting watching and a truly unique experience!

Fundu Lagoon Resort is situated on a remote and beautiful beach on the south western side of Pemba, and is only accessible by boat. Fundu is the epitome of a “bare foot paradise” with a distinct Robinson Crusoe air in a remote and peaceful location.

There are eighteen rooms, consisting of canvas tents set under makuti (thatch) roofs on wooden decks, all with views over the sea.

The rooms are equipped with large double or twin beds, mosquito nets, ceiling and standing fans, and indoor and outdoor seating areas. Each has an ensuite bathroom. The rooms are connected to the main buildings by wooden walkways or paths through indigenous forest. Some rooms are situated along the beachfront and the remaining on the hillside, which have wide views over the lagoon.

The Suites

Two of the eighteen rooms are suites, with their own private chill out deck and plunge pool, and four are superior suites which also have an extensive indoor and outdoor lounge space and mezzanine platform.

Trips are available to nearby Misali Island with a pristine beach and superb snorkelling and diving. Dhow sunset cruises and canoe safaris through the mangroves are also available. Excursions around Pemba island can also be organised with some advanced notice.

Getting There

The main means of visiting Pemba Island are by light aircraft charter or schedule flight. The airport is Chake Chake in the centre of the island. After arriving at the airport there is a short vehicle ride to Mkoani Port which takes approximately 30 minutes. The Resort provides a private speedboat service (20-25 minutes) from Mkoani Port to Fundu Lagoon.
